Studio Arts 101
We offer art classes for all ages, and
weekly studio art sessions with artists.

 

Drawing I    (prerequisite for Drawing II)

3 levels:  (4-7 years (Little Picasso’s art class),
8-12 years, 13+ thru adult.)

The two main areas of emphasis are drawing techniques (using primarily graphite) and learning to see like an artist. We will follow a step-by-step approach used by the masters and cover contour drawing, sketching, mapping, shading (value scale) to make objects appear “real” and 3-dimensional. Students will learn to tap into their “right brain” creativity and more accurately draw what they see.

Drawing II

2 levels:  (8-12 years and 13+ thru Adult.)

This class builds on the previous “You Can Learn to Draw I”. More advanced drawing techniques are introduced including mark making and sighting. The focus will be on design and composition, arial/linear perspective and form/shadow. We will be drawing from photographs and still life (3-dimensional) with strong light sources.  Other drawing materials will be introduced including charcoal and Conte crayon.

H, HB, 2B, 4B, 7B and 9B graphite pencil, Faber castell/Pitt 0.5 mm black permanent ink pen.
Blending stump, ruler, Conte crayon (white/sanguine/brown/black)

Painting I - Acrylic  (prerequisite for Painting II)

3 levels:  4-7 years (Little Picasso’s art classes) 8-12 years and 13+ thru adult.

The different kinds of grounds, acrylics, binders and mediums are introduced for working primarily on canvas.  Basic step-by-step techniques including blending, glazing, sgraffito, impasto techniques and caligraphy with different brushes/palette knife are demonstrated during class.  Naming of pigment colors and basic color mixing on the palette and canvas are explored and demonstrated.

Galeria (Winsor/Newton) acrylic paint:  12 colors beginner set plus ultramarine blue.
12”x16” Fredrix canvas pad (for exercises)
12”x12” stretched canvas or 11”x14” two pack (optional)

Painting II - Acrylic

2 Levels:  8-12 years and 13+ thru Adult.

Different eras of painting are explored including Impressionism,  Expressionism, Abstract and discussion of the relevant masters.  Emphasis is on design/composition, color theory and form/value.  Your personal visual expression is encouraged through observation and application.  There are regular step-by-step class demonstrations and personal attention.
Some drawing skills for Acrylic Painting II will be helpful.
